VPS (Virtual Private Server) Hosting

A lot of people want to know, just what is VPS hosting? Also known as virtual private server hosting, it is like other hosting options somewhat tricky. There are a veritable ton of different hosting options out there, after all. It can sometimes be difficult to know which will be the best choice for you and for your needs. If you are considering virtual private server (VPS) hosting, for example, you are better off knowing a few things right from the bat. For instance, you need to realizing that this type of hosting is both flexible and economical. No matter what kind of web site you have, it can almost certainly fit your needs. At the same time, you need to know that different host servers will offer different levels and specs for virtual private server hosting.

Of course, none of that answers the question of just what virtual private server hosting really is, does it? On that note, we first have to talk about just how this type of hosting really works in comparison with some of the other hosting options out there. When you are a part of shared hosting, you have to realize that your web site really is hosted with any number of other sites, on a single machine or server. All of the sites sharing have access to the same resources, such as disk space, CPU, and RAM. The good thing about shared hosting is that your web site is able to use whatever resources it needs. The bad new is, your site can only use those resources if they are currently available; if they are not available, well, then you - and your site - are pretty well out of luck, which can be a problem. However, this is generally only true for really enormous web sites that eat up a lot of resources at all time.

Then there are what are known as dedicated hosts. As the name suggests, with a dedicated server, then your web site will be the only site that gets hosted on that particular server. In general, then, it is believed that virtual private servers are located somewhere in between the two. That is somewhat true and somewhat false as well. You see, while VPS hosting does indeed fall to the middle ground between dedicated servers and shared servers, it is so much more than that. If your site is hosted by this kind of server, you will have all your own disk space and RAM; however, your CPU will be shared among different sites - but not an enormous amount of them.

As well, it generally runs the middle ground in price. Using a shared server is relatively inexpensive, often falling in at less than ten dollars a month. Dedicated hosts, however, can cost a lot of money. VPS hosting falls right in the middle, making it affordable but not cheap - and in the world of web hosting, you really do get what you pay for.
